Also known as a solar water heating system, solar thermal uses the sun to warm up water for your home. It uses solar panels called collectors, which are fitted on to your roof. The panels collect the heat from the sun and use it to heat up water in a cylinder. Solar thermal works all year round, although you’ll need to heat your water further during the winter months, for example with an immersion heater. Since solar energy is a renewable resource, by installing solar thermal you can reduce your energy bills and help protect the environment.

We have improved many different types of homes across the UK by solar thermal. Here is an example of a fitted solar thermal panel.
A 4 bedroom house with 4 or 5 people with electric immersion heating, savings could be between £250-£300. (dependant on usage and 20p/kwh electric unit charge).
Solar thermal systems are also eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive. This is a Government backed payment, which gets paid on a quarterly basis over 7 year period from when the system gets commissioned.
Both the Domestic RHI and the Green Home Grant can be claimed when you install solar thermal. In order to do this, you must claim the Green Home Grant voucher first and then notify Ofgem that you have used it when you apply for accreditation to the Domestic RHI. The Green Homes Grant will then be deducted from your Domestic RHI payments.
So how is the RHI calculated for Solar Thermal?
The amount of hot water produced by the solar thermal system is measured in kWh, and this number can be found on the MCS report. To calculate your RHI payment – you can simply multiply this kWh number by the RHI rate for solar thermal (19.2p / kWh) and this will give you your annual payment.
That would make a lot of sense, we would be delighted to help. We are skilled and approved installers of other energy improvements as well, such as solar panels, smart thermometers, internal wall insulation, room in roof insulation and loft insulation, all of which qualify for the Green Homes Grant. We are experienced in installing several improvements at once and do so with as little disruption as possible to our customers and their homes.
This measure can be fitted for free under the Government Grant Scheme.
