What is external wall insulation?

External Wall Insulation involves fixing insulation boards to the outside of your external walls, then covering them with a protective render. It creates a thermal barrier around your home and can significantly improve its energy performance.

The insulation is:

  • Installed entirely on the outside of the property
  • Finished with a clean, modern render (available in various colours/textures)
  • Weather-resistant and breathable
  • Ideal for older, solid wall homes without a cavity

Is external wall insulation right for my home?

External Wall Insulation may be right for you if:

  • Your home was built before 1920 and has solid walls
  • The walls are accessible from the outside
  • Your existing render is worn, cracked, or outdated
  • You’re looking to improve both thermal efficiency and appearance
  • You do not live in a listed building or conservation area (special permissions may be required)

Can I get loft or roof insulation for free?

Yes. External Wall Insulation is a key measure under both ECO4 and GBIS.

You could be eligible for full funding if:

  • You receive certain means-tested benefits
  • Your income is below £31,000 or have a long term medical condition
  • Your home has an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G
  • You live in a Council Tax band A–D (or A–E in Scotland/Wales)
