Who is eligible for the Great British Insulation Scheme funding?

If your home is difficult and expensive to heat and keep warm, there’s a good chance you’d benefit from insulation, and you may be eligible for the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) funding. GBIS funding is available to:

  • Homeowners, landlords and tenants in England, Wales and Scotland
  • Households with an energy performance certificate (EPC) of D to G
  • Households in Council Tax bands A-D in England
  • Households in Council Tax bands A-E in Scotland or Wales
  • Those in receipt of certain benefits

What is GBIS funding?

The Great British Insulation Scheme is a government initiative that helps difficult-to-heat homes improve their energy efficiency. Eligible homes could receive free insulation upgrades to retain heat better and reduce their energy bills. The scheme offers fully funded upgrades that aim to:

  • Cut your energy bills
  • Improve home warmth and comfort
  • Reduce carbon emissions

This support helps households to tackle rising energy costs, fuel poverty and climate change, making your home cheaper and easier to heat.

How can I check my Great British Insulation Scheme eligibility?

Broadly speaking, there are two parts to eligibility under the GBIS rules:

Your Home

You may be eligible for GBIS funding if your home has a low energy-efficiency rating of D, E, F or G.

Alongside the EPC rating, property type is important too. We're only able to support traditional housing (detached, semi-detached, terrace, bungalow, etc) and flats. 

You also need to own your home or rent from a landlord (and have their permission to apply for funding).

GBIS was set up to support low-income and vulnerable households to reduce their energy bills and bring people out of fuel poverty. With this in mind, there are three groups that we are able to support. You only need to be in one of these groups:

You may qualify for GBIS funding if you are in receipt of one or more of the following benefits:
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit
  • Child Benefit

How do I apply for GBIS funding?

Applying for GBIS funding is simple, and we do all of the hard work for you. All you need to do is answer a few simple questions about your home and benefit status to see if you’re eligible, and we’ll apply for funding on your behalf following a survey of your home.
