Up to a quarter of your home’s heat can be lost through an uninsulated roof. Whether you have a traditional loft space or a converted attic room, proper insulation is one of the most effective ways to reduce energy bills and improve comfort year-round.


At LMF Energy Services, we install a full range of loft and roof insulation types — and for eligible households, these upgrades may be available free of charge through government-backed schemes like ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS).

What is roof and loft insulation?

Loft and roof insulation involves adding a layer (or multiple layers) of thermal material to stop warm air escaping through your ceiling and out of your roof.

Depending on your home’s layout, the insulation might be:

  • Laid across the floor of your loft (standard cold loft insulation)
  • Fitted between and over the rafters (warm loft or roof insulation)
  • Installed in the walls and ceiling of a room-in-roof or loft conversion

Each method is tailored to your property’s structure, condition, and usage.

Do I need roof or loft insulation?

You might need an upgrade if you experience any of the following:

  • Your upstairs rooms feel cold, even when the heating is on
  • You notice significant temperature differences between floors
  • You don’t currently have any loft insulation
  • Your existing insulation is less than 270mm thick or looks patchy
  • Your home has a converted attic without visible insulation

Can I get loft or roof insulation for free?

Yes. Both loft and roof insulation are commonly funded measures under both ECO4 and GBIS.

You could be eligible for full funding if:

  • You receive certain means-tested benefits
  • Your income is below £31,000 or have a long term medical condition
  • Your home has an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G
  • You live in a Council Tax band A–D (or A–E in Scotland/Wales)
