Whole-House Retrofit Solutions

Designing and delivering retrofit as a complete system.

Whole-house retrofit treats a property as a connected system. Insulation, ventilation, heating and controls all influence one another, and the performance of each measure depends on how well they work together.

Our approach begins with a detailed assessment of the property, followed by coordinated design and delivery through a single team. This ensures the right combination of measures is selected for each home and installed in the correct sequence, avoiding the gaps, delays and risks that can occur when multiple contractors manage different elements in isolation.

Property-led assessment

Every programme begins with a detailed property-level assessment. We examine each home as it actually exists and build a clear picture of how it performs and how it’s used.
As part of the process, we look at three core areas:

  1. Occupancy assessment: How the property is used, the needs of the resident and current heating patterns

  2. Energy assessment: The current energy performance and heat loss profile

  3. Condition assessment: The structure, fabric and general condition of the overall building

To support the above areas, the assessment also assesses:

  • Construction type, building materials and any architectural features

  • The condition of the property’s walls, roof, floors, windows and doors

  • Existing heating, ventilations, hot water and lighting systems

  • Any signs of moisture, condensation, mould or structural risks

  • Planning or heritage constraints, such as listed status or conservation areas

  • A measured survey of the property, including dimensions of the heat loss envelope

  • Any existing or previously installed energy efficiency measures

This assessment forms the foundation of the design. It also determines which measures are appropriate for the property, how they interact, and what potential risks must be managed before installation begins.

Coordinated retrofit design

The retrofit design is built directly from the property assessment.

When multiple measures are installed, each element must be designed with the others in mind. Heating system specifications depend on the fabric performance of the building. Insulation can affect airtightness, which in turn influences ventilation requirements. Solar PV generation must be considered alongside heating demand and overall energy use.

Our design team uses the assessment data to:

  • Model how the property will perform after improvement

  • Specify the right combination of measures for that specific home

  • Identify and manage risks such as overheating, moisture or ventilation imbalance

  • Plan the correct sequence of installation

Because design is handled by one coordinated team, decisions are made with full visibility of the property and programme rather than being passed between separate organisations responsible for individual elements.

Measures we deliver

We design and install the full range of measures required for whole-house retrofit programmes, including:

  • Cavity wall, external wall and internal wall insulation

  • Loft and room-in-roof insulation

  • Air source heat pumps

  • Solar PV systems

  • Ventilation systems

  • Heating controls and upgrades

Working with hard-to-treat properties

Not every home is straightforward. Solid wall construction, non-standard build types, rural housing stock and properties with limited external access often require more considered design work and flexible solutions.

We have experience working across a wide range of housing types and carefully evaluate the options where standard retrofit approaches are not appropriate.

From design through to installation

Once the retrofit design is complete, the same team remains responsible for delivery.

There is no handover between separate design organisations and installation contractors. The people accountable for the design remain accountable for how it is delivered. This allows issues encountered on site to be resolved quickly by the team that understands the programme as a whole.
